Decimal grids are a very common and versatile visual representation of decimals, and really just show a picture of commercial base 10 materials. This is one argument for using base 10 materials for decimals.
They can be easily extended to hundredths and even thousandths. They also work well in seeing how various fractions convert to decimals and percent in grades 5 and 6. They allow for investigations of adding and subtracting and rounding decimals in grade 5.
Being a pictorial presentation, students should have a chance to work with some concrete materials before using just the paper grids.
