One strategy for the three facts builds on the doubles. For a fact like 3 X 8, students can think ‘double 8, plus another 8’.
|This should be shown to students visually or concretely. One activity I like to do is to cut a large array out, as to the right.|
|You can then fold over one of the rows. Students can see the 2 X 8 on the front, and if they flip it over…|
|they can see the extra group of 8 on the back.|
