In grade 4, students are required to divide whole numbers up to 81÷ 9 using a variety of tools and student generated algorithms, but not the standard algorithm. They also have to divide whole numbers by 10 and 100.
A popular flexible method to introduce to students is the partial quotient method. Teachers have shared several modifications to this method which help explain it to students, as well as set up for the teaching of the standard algorithm in grade 5.
