Decimal grids are a very common and versatile visual representation of decimals, and really just show a picture of commercial base 10 materials.
They can be easily extended to hundredths and even thousandths. They also work well in seeing how various fractions convert to decimals and percent in grades 5 and 6. They allow for investigations of adding and subtracting and rounding decimals in grade 5.
Being a pictorial presentation, students should have a chance to work with some concrete materials in grade 4 before using just the paper grids.
