JJ’s Method

What are these kids doing? While watching a group of students explain how they found their subtraction answer I was little befuddled.  Their record kind of looked like this:



It should make more sense after you look over the structured record below.

I discovered Cathy Fosnot had a very similar experience from two students named John and Jerry, or similar names. She called the method JJ’s method.

This method relies on students understanding that you just have to subtract the amount required, but it doesn’t really matter from where.
