Funny Numbers

Seventy-fourteen!  Twenty-twelve!

They can also be considered a way of regrouping double digit numbers, which underlies the standard ways of multidigit addition and subtraction.

When we ‘borrow’, we’re really rearranging the subtrahend (top number) into 60 and 12. When using funny numbers, we just rename the number sixty-twelve, which while silly just makes it more fun for students.
