Funny Numbers

Seventy-fourteen!  Twenty-twelve!

OK, they sound a little odd, but funny numbers are just a way of playing with multiple representations of numbers.  Making multiple representations are considered a critical skill in understanding place value in grade 1.

They can also be considered a way of regrouping double digit numbers, which underlies the standard ways of multidigit addition and subtraction.

If we take a subtraction question that requires borrowing or regrouping, it might look like this:

When we ‘borrow’, we’re really rearranging the subtrahend (top number) into 60 and 12. When using funny numbers, we just rename the number sixty-twelve, which while silly just makes it more fun for students.
