Subtraction Facts

Many students learn strategies for addition facts, but then resort back to counting down when doing any subtraction.

A clearly thought out instructional path can help student use ideas they already have to work out subtraction facts.  This will help when approaching double digit subtraction in grade 2.

Some research suggests that the subtraction facts should be delayed until children know at least three quarters of the addition facts. This is likely due to students using Think Addition as a major strategy in learning subtraction.

This suggests that the fact family approach to basic facts should be used after addition strategies are rehearsed. However, subtraction is actually a more complex topic than addition, but we frequently spend a lot less time on it.
