Students learn the names and symbols for numbers throughout Kindergarten and grade 1. However, many people don’t realize the number of subskills within this topic.
Understanding the number word sequence, which some people think of as counting, is one small piece of student understanding. Actual counting is much more than reciting a word sequence.
For formal counting, students use their word sequences to purposefully keep track of items, with the goal of finding a total (known as establishing numerosity).
Other skills in learning about number words and numerals include identifying and recognizing numerals, and sequencing, ordering and locating numerals.
