Number Sense

In grade 1, students work with many concepts that will form the basis of their understanding of place value and further number sense.

One of the key developments is moving students away from seeing numbers as just part of a counting sequence and towards understanding their relationships to other numbers.

There are four interrelated number relationships (5&10 anchors, subitizing, part part whole, and near numbers) that students will work on in grade 1, hopefully continuing work from Kindergarten.  A good foundation in these relationships should be in place before looking at the addition strategies.

Number Relationship Mat

This mat guides students to take a number and construct a variety of number relationships. When laminated, students can work on them with erasable markers, using a new number each week.

  1. Good Evening,
I am loving this site to help my first graders with number sense and moving through the standards in a more reasonable way than our district math program. I was looking for the Number Relationship Mats. I keep getting an error message. Would you be able to send me a link to these mats? I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you so much!

  2. I was able to figure out how to download the second two, but not the first one that is mentioned. If that one is still a working mat .. I would love to get it.
    Thanks again.

  3. Good Evening Again,
I guess it must be late … I just realized they are all the same document, in different versions. I am all set. I have what I need. I am so excited to start using these in my math groups/centers. Thanks for all of your hard work!
